Don’t tell me. Internet Explorer Is dead (again, kinda). What’s that, you say? There are thousands of mission-critical legacy applications that require IE that just happen to be in the hands of customers that have been migrating away from Microsoft? Cut to Mr. Smithers – “Excellent” – and Edge IE Mode was born!
If you have been using Chrome as a default browser, you are doubtlessly familiar with Google’s Legacy Browser Support. It’s a reasonably bare-bones application that allows configuring URLs via group policy to open in IE11, then returns the user to Chrome. On the other hand, Chromium Edge uses Enterprise Site List Mode in place of LBS to achieve the same for MS products.
So… Now that IE is going to be “dead” come this June, Google has been forced to recommend the unthinkable: Frankenstein their product (LBS) with Microsoft’s product (EMSL)! Leaving aside the apparent support nightmare that two stacked applications from two different vendors will rain upon your help desk, Chrome users are left in EDGE after completing their task in IE Mode!
Being left in Edge on the surface isn’t too big of a deal except, I don’t know, a whole different set of Group Policies, addons, bookmarks, saved passwords for social media – OK, that’s one can slide – etc.
